Procedures on Site

  1. Survey area for a flat surface.

  2. Areas should be close to eachother, and should have the same landscape and conditions.

  3. Set up 3 plots of 3'x3' (use string and flags to mark areas)

  4. Find 3 logs with moss. Logs should be very moist and around 3 ft long.

  5. Find 3 logs without moss.  Logs should be moist and about 3 ft long. If you cannot find any logs without moss take moss off.

  6. Find 3 strips of moss off of a log or rock.  The strips of moss should be 3 ft long.

  7. Cut 12 slips of paper and write moss on 3 slips, moss log on 3 slips, log on 3 slips, and bare on 3 slips.

  8. Combine all slips into a container.

  9. Walk to plot 1 and pull 4 strips. document the plot area and order in which you pulled the 4 strips.

  10. Repeat step 9 for plots 2 and 3.

  11. Take note of the conditions of day, plants near each plot, canopies, and other significant conditions for each plot.

  12. Before applying seeds to appropriate hosts in plots, clear area of plants

  13. Go to plot 1 and lay hosts in the order in which it was documented and pulled.

  14. Any plots with bare ground needs to be watered before seed application.

  15. For any plots that have logs, the logs need to be stripped to expose wood.

  16. For any plots that have two of the same hosts next to eachother (log/log, moss/moss, or bare, bare) use a string to seperate them.

  17. Logs and moss logs do not need any special treatments before seed application.

  18. Apply seeds to hosts.

  19. After application of seeds, water the hosts.

  20. Repeat steps 12-19 for plots 2 and 3

In class Procedures

  1. Gather ohia seeds and sift any debri out

  2. Weigh all seeds. Then divide the total wieght by 12 becasue there are 3 plots and 4 hosts in each plot.

  3. Distribute the seeds evenly into 12 seperate packages or envelopes.

  4. Refridgerate seeds until ready to use
